ABSTRACT:
The paper recounts the efforts of the Romanian military authorities to locate the archives of the army of the Moldavian Democratic Republic, more than a decade after the Union of Bessarabia with Romania. Following King Carol II’s decision in 1932 to decorate Bessarabian officers who had served in that army, it was discovered that no nominal records of those soldiers were available. This prompted a wide-ranging investigation across military units and archival departments to recover the missing documents. The correspondence among officers, reports, and archival searches reveal both the administrative challenges of the time and the symbolic importance attributed to this act of recognition. Beyond its documentary scope, the article underscores the broader significance of archives as custodians of collective memory and as essential instruments for reconstructing the historical and moral fabric of a community.
REZUMAT:
Studiul prezintă eforturile autorităților militare române de a identifica arhivele armatei Republicii Democratice Moldovenești, la mai bine de un deceniu după Unirea Basarabiei cu România. În urma deciziei regelui Carol al II-lea, din anul 1932, de a-i decora pe ofițerii basarabeni care serviseră în acea armată, s-a constatat absența oricăror evidențe nominale, fapt care a determinat declanșarea unei ample cercetări în cadrul unităților militare și al serviciilor arhivistice. Corespondența dintre ofițeri, rapoartele și investigațiile arhivistice relevă atât dificultățile administrative ale epocii, cât și semnificația simbolică atribuită acestui gest de recunoaștere. Dincolo de aspectul documentar, articolul subliniază importanța arhivelor ca depozitare ale memoriei colective și ca instrumente indispensabile pentru reconstituirea țesutului istoric și moral al unei comunități.
